Celebration Concert and West Buckland Olympics

West Buckland School is gearing up to celebrate the Olympics with a music and sporting extravaganza. The North Devon Sinfonia and West Buckland School Choir will be heralding London's Olympic year with an epic concert at the Queen's Theatre in Barnstaple on Friday 29th June at 8pm. The concert marks the start of 24 hours of Olympic celebrations, with a sporting family day open to everyone taking place on Saturday 30th June here at West Buckland School.

The concert will include Ana Fernandez-Guerra singing Canteloube's sublime 'Songs of the Auvergne' accompanied by the North Devon Sinfonia, North Devon's own full-scale symphony orchestra. As well as being in her final year of A-levels at West Buckland School, Ana is also studying at the Royal Academy of Music (Junior Department).

The programme will conclude with Orff's monumental 'Carmina Burana', set to dazzle the audience with a chorus of over 120 singers, six percussionists and professional soloists in addition to the North Devon Sinfonia.

On Saturday 30th June, we are holding our own 'West Buckland Olympics' at the school where everyone is invited to take part in a whole range of sporting activities. This is a free entry event from 10.00 – 5.00pm with the emphasis very much on taking part and having fun.

Sports will include volleyball, tennis, indoor rowing, golf, a penalty shoot-out competition, swimming, table tennis, badminton, lawn bowls and West Buckland's own version of the Modern Pentathlon which will include archery and laser shooting.

There will be a hog roast, BBQ, ice- creams, café area, rock concert and a bouncy castle to ensure a fun, friendly, family atmosphere for everyone.

'Competitors' will be assigned a country on arrival and the day will finish with an awards presentation and closing ceremony which will include performances from our dancing and samba band!
